So, now, i am going to start talking about the themes that i found, that was very very very interesting in Macbeth.... lets first look at this lines from the play ( Act 5, Scene 8 ) :
MACDUFF
Hail, king! for so thou art: behold, where stands
The usurper's cursed head: the time is free:
I see thee compass'd with thy kingdom's pearl,
That speak my salutation in their minds;
Whose voices I desire aloud with mine:
Hail, King of Scotland!
Take a close look at the lines Usurper.... What do you understand from the word? what do I understand from the word? Is there such a word really?? Mother of god, what kind of sorcery is this???
Well, in the old English, Usurping will be known as taking or seizing one's power or rights, or in this case, throne without any legal authority. Yes. Usurping is WRONG... It is illegal...
So then, what is regicide that i talked about in the title of this post? Regicide is the killing of the king who is in throne...Regicide will be sinful.
Now, It all makes sense right? Yes, it does.... Basically, I am talking about the themes of this play in this post. This is Shakespeare's second play that i know of that has two of the similar themes. The first one was Hamlet, where King Hamlet's throne was usurped by his own brother, and King Hamlet was killed with poison, also regicide.
In Macbeth, King Duncan was killed, with a dagger, regicide and then, his throne was usurped by Macbeth. We can now see that in both the stories, both the kings, the good and trusting kings, were killed with poison, because people were greedy for power.
Thus, these are the main themes of the play the themes of this play always beguiled me, always fascinated me.... Because, for one, i have learn t about them, so i can basically imagine it. I remember when i studied Hamlet, and how the poison conquered his body, how he suffered before his death. and now when i read about Duncan, how he was killed in his sleep with a dagger, by Macbeth who was influenced by his wife, with the words of the witches and also his own desire for power which made him overlook the fact that Duncan had been kind to him , I have to say, it sort of has an impact on my emotions.
When we sit back and think, Macbeth, and Shakespeare's other plays are all talking about issues we face today. Maybe in the past, they usurped and committed regicide to get the power of the king. Think about it, even nowadays, people are willing to back stab and even go to the extend of ruining someone, in the name of climbing the social ladder, in the name of climbing the ladder of career...
Lets not talk about Old England, lets talk about now...People think that reading Shakespeare, especially his tragedies is such a pain, such a problem in life. Unfortunately, they never seem to understand that what Shakespeare wrote about in the past, albeit in a language too difficult for us to comprehend, is still relevant in the current society.
Furthermore, Shakespeare has wonderfully connoted about how, a woman, can be the reason for a man's rise and also to his downfall... Like the famous words go, behind every successful man, there is a woman.... Behind every failed man, there is also a woman...Never underestimate the power of a woman people, BEWARE.... You see, in Macbeth, Macbeth only wrote a letter to his wife about Duncan coming for a visit... It was Lady Macbeth's master plan to kill Duncan, and she managed to coax Macbeth into agreeing with her plans.,.. When Macbeth could not finish off what they had started, she finished it off.... Although Macbeth also got involved, the catalyst here, was definitely, Lady Macbeth... Lady Macbeth has such powers over her husband, and she was even willing to question his manhood when he hesitated at the beginning. It simply shows how, a woman, when she sets her mind on something, she is willing to go to any extend to achieve it... .... same goes to Shakespeare's other famous tragedy, Hamlet.... Because King Claudius wanted not only the throne, but also the hands of King Hamlet's wife, Queen Gertrude, he killed King Hamlet by poisoning him... Queen Gertrude did not do anything, but the feeling of lust and longing that she aroused in Claudius could be one of the reason he committed regicide... See here, about how a woman can bring about a man's downfall?? See here, about how, even until today, a woman is one of the main reasons, a man, either succeeds, or falls, never to rise again?? Yes... Shakespeare has pointed that out, as an issue, in his ever famous tragedies....
Those were the issues and themes. There is another element that i would love to bring forward here... Take a close look at these lines :
Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood
Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather
The multitudinous seas incarnadine,
Making the green one red.
and then, look at these lines....
“A little water clears us of this deed,” she tells him. “How easy it is then!” (2.2.65–66).
The first lines up there was said by Macbeth, and he was asking, whether all the water of all the ocean, and even quoting King Neptune, the god of the Ocean, could help him wash off the red blood in his hands? and in the next lines, we see Lady Macbeth, cheerfully saying that a little water can wash off the blood in their hands, as if it was some dirty stain, and not the mark of murder..( I am amazed how Lady Macbeth is so cool after her husband has killed somebody ). This two lines clearly shows an amazing irony with one another. Later still, when Lady Macbeth starts walking in her sleep and keeps washing her hands in her sleep, we will see her character change, whic is so opposite the cheerful one you see here now.
Yes, the themes fronted by Shakespeare in this play, is not something that we can look past...It is something that we have to think about, something that we have to look into, in order to understand, and appreciate the beauty of his play, the beauty of his writing...and the depth of his thoughts....
With great power, comes great responsibility,...
If it is meant to be yours, it will be yours,
if you take it by force,
you are heading for downfall....
( not bad, my poetry skills are still cool :P )
So, in a summary, in this post, I have happily spoken and viewed about the themes and issues in Macbeth, that we can connect to our own lives and environment... Who said Shakespeare is old?? Old is gold people, and dear Shakespeare though far ahead of his time...
Now, would it not be nice, to have a mocha frappucino with him, discussing about what may befall the world in another 200 years to come??? hmmmm....

Peace ladies and gentleman, let me refresh my brains for the video process now.... :)
Yes, let me figure it out, like a boss shall i say???
Yes, let me figure it out, like a boss shall i say???
See you, have a good day :)
An usurper he is indeed. And he made that choice that led him to his doom.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you pointed out about how a woman will work for something once she sets her mind to it, be it for good goals or otherwise.
All these themes and issues that you have discussed appear time and again in works of writers throughout the different centuries. History repeats itself and we never actually learn from it.
