(10) And the Lights DAWN.... On Shakespeare...On Macbeth

Yes, yes, finally the light is dawning, On Shakespeare... On Macbeth.... Wow right?

Okay okay, Khayma here.....

Haha, cute or not???? Okay, you can officially slap me now... But since it's my tenth post, i decided i might just get a bit overboard...

Okay okay, back to business... My tenth post is going to be about me, talking about Shakespeare and Macbeth, a viewpoint that has to do much with psychology... You know, this Shakespeare guy is a very very smart dude and his imagination is simply superb, so amazing till i want to actually doubt his gender... I am used to girls having amazing imagination, but a guy, at that times???

Okay, so anyway, Ms Dzeelfa took us on a journey ride with Shakespeare and Macbeth, and her revelations of the novel made me think hard.... What did i think bout?? I shall let you know here...

First and foremost, Shakespeare is very very forward in his thinking.... How? If we see in the witches and Lady Macbeth, and how Macbeth adressess Lady Macbeth, we can see evidence for this.... Shakespeare knows that women love to gossip, and i guess , that even in the olden era where women had to wear iron bras, they loved to gossip, and dear Shakespeare beautifully penned this quality of women in his play... I mean, of course they couldn't gossip about make up and hot guys, they are witches, so they gossiped about disgusting materials for witch craft and revenge... But hey, even now, women love crapping about revenge right? So how backwards was Shakespeare?

But Shakespeare was very forward when it came to how a man should treat a woman, especially after marriage... Okay, we see in the letter that Macbeth sends to Lady Macbeth that he adresses her as his " my dearest partner in greatness "... I am not very sure about the era where Shakespeare lived in, but i know that now, even in an era where we have reached modernisation, women are still not always regarded with equality... For shakespeare to write about women being a man's partner in greatness in his era, he was a very forward thinking man... amazing mr shakespeare...simply amazing....

Okay, now we have moved past that, lets look at his amazing imagination and use of words... I love it the way he wrote what Lady Macbeth says to Macbeth, " look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under't". Lets look at the way he put it... Flower is filled with honey and a serpent is filled with poison... Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth who is as sweet as honey to become a man who is as poisonous as a snake.... Which wife would want that? But Lady Macbeth does.... The play of word, the use of juxtapose of having one man but making him don on a different character from his real character.. Shakespeare has done a brilliant job actually....

Next, lets take a closer look at Lady Macbeth...

Lady Macbeth : tis to tender tha babe that milks me, i would, while it was smiling in my face, have pluc'd my nipple from its boneless gums. and dash'd the brains out, had i so sworn as you have done this...

OH MY MOTHER OF JESUS..... what kind of lady can say that..... Isn't it so obvious that she has never borne a child... What kind of mother can say that about her own child? The one that she carries in her womb and gives birth to? This was the worst kinds of imagery, i nearly vomited, and cried as Ms Dzeelfa was explaining this part to us in the class.... arghhhhh...damn, i hate you woman.... i mean...Lady Macbeth...

Another thing in this entire play that i found very very fascinating is the very fact that Shakespeare has not used a name for Lady Macbeth.... You see, a name gives you an identity... Lady Macbeth, is known as Lady Macbeth..... Macbeth's wife... That is her identity...his wife.... nothing else... If you see in my previous post, i did question about why couldn't Shakespeare have given her a more feminine name.... But now i somehow find a connection, although it might not be entirely true... You see, there is a part where Lady Macbeth does say " Unsex me"... Remember? She does not want to be a woman, she wants to be a man... Thus, that is why she shares Macbeth's name, besides being his partner in greatness, she is also sharing his name of masculinity.... Gosh, this can bring up to another question of GAY...but i am so not gonna discuss it here....

Another thing about Shakespeare is that he uses a lot of psychology in his writing... From olden days to now.... men will be men, and women will be women.... A man does not want to do something, either the women seduces his mind out of his head or she challenges his manliness, and, tadahhh.... yeah, he becomes a total kitten in her hands...speaking figuratively....

So, that is exactly what Shakespeare has done in Macbeth... Maybe it was not right to allow Lady Macbeth to seduce Macbeth, as she did not seem very feminine, so he just made her to challenge Macbeth.. awesome right???

However, shakespeare also explores a person's change in life... How? Again we have Lady Macbeth.. From being such a cruel lady, she becomes one wrought with guilt and pain that takes her to her deathbed... So here, maybe he was trying to tell that, humans change, they do have the capability to change..and maybe he was also trying to instill moral values to people reading it.. I mean, he can't allow Lady Macbeth to go on living happily forever and after right? Then everyone would think that i can do anything i want, i will be fine...

Well.... Thats hat i wanted to point out, Shakespeare's forwardness in thinking, his intelligence, his use of psychology, his understanding about woman and men.... Whoa, he is one hell of a man....

This is funny right?

Well then, it's time to say goodbye, but don't worry, this ain't the last of me... I will be coming back.... with my next post :P

(9) Persona Poem On... DUNCAN

Hey ho, Khayma here ho......

So, we're supposed to be doing a persona poem eh?? Haha, my poetry skills are not that amazing.... But, i'll try... The reason i chose Duncan is because, well, he is such a ... Weak character, despite being a king and all... He should not have been too trusting neither should he have been too... in simple words...stupid?

Yeah, coz, if you know the Thane of Cawdor can betray you., why not the Thane of Glamis?

Anyway, here is my two cents on Duncan :)

Duncan
Royal, Powerful, Trusting
King of Scotland
Loves wine, power and Macbeth
Afraid of losses and traitors
Who wants to continue as a king
Unbeknownst to him, a murder is plotted
The Thanes of Cawdor always cheat him
Thats Duncan, The king Of Scotland
Hailed once, but then he died
What a pity
Poor Duncan

It dosent't really follow the out line of the persona poem, but this is the best i could come up with, based on my own knowledge of Duncan.... Hope it's okay...

I don't know why google pictures him as an old man..,.

and then i find this...wakakaka...so funny... Imagine the king looked like this ?

(8) Macbeth Phenomenon

Before this I already talked about our video in the making process, but now, I would like to share how i feel after the video presentation. To be honest, I'm afraid of your and our classmates acceptance towards our video. Our group use different techniques, so i'm afraid if you and all other friends would not understand or get the idea what we trying to do.maybe, our group make a simple video, but a lot of effort are taken in making it reality. We gives the best we can,I would say 101% commitments from each group members. From the feedback we receive,Thank Gods...Alhamdulilah.It's not a disappointment to us.

Regarding Macbeth:

Macbeth is not a first Shakespeare’s piece that I read..Before this I read Measure for Measure but I’m not into it because of the language. Most of the time I depends on translation text. So, I’m not really enjoy it. But after reading Macbeth, my interest towards Shakespeare’s work grows drastically. To be honest, At first I read Macbeth because of Ms Dzeelfa asks us to read it as one of the major text studied in this course. But as I read the text, understand it…I forget about the language, but focus on the story in it. I learn a lot when I read Macbeth. Now, the language is not a big deal for me but the story did matters. Remember, when you (Ms Dzeelfa) talked about King Lear in the class? Do you believe me if I said, after I go back to my room I Google about the story?Yess I did. When I read the original text, I don’t understand…I did ask Khayma to tell me the story in a brief…now, I know the gist’s of the story. For me, it is very tragic story...I understand how king Lear feel when he thoughts the daughter he loves the most, did not love him as he thought.I wish if the father can understand his daughter.

Yaa…by the way, I am a biggest fan of Greek mythology. I love to read about the Greek gods and I can remember a few of their names and roles without having problems.  So, this is another thing that I like to Google with. That’s why I really like Oedipus by Sophocles. The story is tragic and very relevant to the society until now. Why I’m talking about this? It is because what I want to share with you after this are related to Greek, Athens…yaaa…..something like that. So, talking about this, after reading Macbeth…like I said before, my interest towards Shakespeare’s works grows …..I was looking forward to read other Shakespeare works. I search for the text, read the analysis, summary and the background of the story. I’m still not finish up my reading on Macbeth, but I hope you don’t mind if I am searching for other Shakespeare’s works? I promise I won’t read other Shakespeare plays until I finish reading Macbeth. Okay, what I want to share with you is, “Midsummer Night’s Dream”…I’ve read the synopsis…Oh my god, I like the story. It is about four Athenian who still discovering and searching their true love. How things turn upside down when the merry, Puck spilt the flower juice…warghhhhhh..i just love the story.I’ve search the full versions of original text on the internet and I’m planning to print it out as soon as I finish reading Macbeth.

Next is Twelfth Night. I’ve search the synopsis, and the story analysis. I really like this story too, For your information I read the story a bit, because I cannot stop myself from reading that story….But when I realizes, I still have things to do with Macbeth, I hold my intentions….warghhhhhhhh…so hard…and I should control my hand from clicking the story. Yaa…I have the softcopy in my pendrive too and I can’t wait to finish reading Macbeth, so I can read this two plays that I really want to.

At this moment, I Google about Anthony and Cleopatra….and guess what? This is another Shakespeare’s story that I really want to read…Never mind, I shall control myself to stop find another Shakespeare’s works until I finish reading Macbeth. But this won’t last long, I will finish reading Macbeth at the latest, this Friday..So I can spend my weekend reading another story.

You must be wondering why I’m telling you all this. This is my reflection, how Macbeth influences me to discover other Shakespeare works. If you not assigned us to read Macbeth,(I should thanked you for making Macbeth compulsory to read.) I won’t fall in love with the story. If I don’t read and search about Macbeth; I would never discover other Shakespeare’s best works. I really glad how Macbeth change my perception on Shakespeare works. Now, I would say that, by reading Macbeth, it leads me to read more other Shakespeare’s works. Before this, not that I hate Shakespeare….but the language always become a boundaries for me to read Shakespeare works but now, language is not a boundaries for me to read Shakespeare plays. Before this, I think…not just me but most of my friends thought Shakespeare is a scary to read, but through reading Macbeth, I discovers others Shakespeare interesting works that are worth to read. Deep in my heart, I glad I read Macbeth…it open my eyes about the beautifulness of Shakespeare’s old English story that all this while, I scared to read it. I wonder what would happen if I’m not reading Macbeth??????

p/s: Now Macbeth phenomenon has infect me....BUT I'm glad.

(7) Muchas gracias

Assalamualaikum and Hi Miss Dzeelfa!

Hoyeahhhhh! All the hard work was paid off. The feedbacks and comments from you and from the other classmates towards our video was really unexpected. I love the fact that most of our classmates were actually enjoyed the video and they get the meaning of the concept! :) Oh yeah, and I love the fact that you actually got the meaning that we are trying to convey by putting the mystical songs, smoke, and also the close up of “Lady Macbeth’s” hand while shes playing the chimes! At first I thought that I need to explain the underlying meaning of the chimes, smoke and the music background to the audience, but I was totally wrong! and I am glad that I was wrong! Hehe
It is hard to tell how I feel when we about to presents our video to the class. I am really nervous if it didn’t turn good. But... everything went awesomeeee! Thank you ALLAH! Thank you Miss Dzeelfa! Thank you friends!  THE HATS were really happy about it!

Thank youuuuuu! *Hi Miss Dzeelfa, dont be afraid, this is us!* haha
As for the feedback, we will take it as a guideline and a motivation to do a better job on the next projects (If there is). Thank you for the compliments and all the good words!
Indirectly, although the video’s project looks like a simple activity, student cantered, fun and entertaining activity, but believe or not, as for me, all the videos shown from all the groups makes me become more aware and  clear , or understand about who Macbeth is? Who Lady Macbeth is? and all the other characters in ‘MACBETH’. I think it is the main point of this activity, which is  by assigning us to create this video; We are not learn ‘Macbeth’ in a typical way (reading books, notes, yada yada), but you have assigned us to complete the task in an interesting ways! Thanks to you Miss Dzeelfa!

The word of the day: Thank You! ;)

(6) Tough time

*sigh*
*sigh*
*sigh*

Editing a video could be the best part ever or could be the worst part ever!!

Honestly, I love editing videos, but I didn’t like it when I need to edit it when there are so much more of assignments at the same time. For your information Miss Dzeelfa, on the same day we need to show our video, there are two micro teaching sessions that we need to handle with. I am not prepared at all!  But guess what?? My name has been called for both micro teachings! Argrggghhh

There’s so many problem occurred while editing this video. The FIRST problem happened when all the videos that we took were not compatible with ‘movie makers’ (which is the only software that I have to edit a video)! So? Yeah we need to actually convert all the videos to another format! ...and I thought that everything will go fine after this. BUT...

Another problem occurs!

After a really long night editing the video, and without sleep, I can’t save the project as a video! It remains the same even after several tries! and yes, I nearly cried (there are two more lesson plan to do, and I need to  prepare the materials for the micro teaching!)

I gave up. And I take a power nap for about 20 minutes.

To make the story short (If not, I might need to continue at another entries hehe), I finally managed to save the video after several hours figuring out the problems! Alhamdulillah.

But hey! This is what we called ‘university student’s life’ right? J

Believe or not, we only use one location for the entire scene in our video. We recorded it at ‘Bilik Music’ at our college. The concept of the video allowed us to minimize the usage of props, lighting, and also costume!  But the biggest challenge in preparing this video is to ensure that the video is not looking dull or maybe boring. We admit that we took the risk when we choose to use‘Gothic’ elements that require us to only take a close up figure of the actors and the atmosphere of the video is totally black!

After all, we always think positive about it and pray that everything will go fine!

The making of “Macbeth” by THE HATS PRODUCTION:

Sharmila and I wore the same dress! yes its me Miss Dzeelfa! muahahahaha

see you on the next entry! :D
